Peace Caravan IntroductionPeace Caravan
Animating an African World Cup
Caravanamani takes off to promote peace building through football and to enthuse for 2010.
In 2004 a group of some 50 people toured the countries of Burundi,
Rwanda, Uganda and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo over a
three weeks period on a peace mission. The group called itself 'Caravanamani', which means 'Peace Caravan' in Swahili, and comprised
representatives from an international consortium of non-governmental
organisations, actors, artists, dancers and football players. One of the
participating NGOs was 'Esperance - Football for Peace', a local
non-governmental organisation, founded in 1996 in Kigali, that aims at
involving children and youths, especially girls and young women in
sports participation, community work and active citizenship.
