A partnership for the common Green Goal!

Durban, 10 December 2011. While the high-level negotiations at the UN climate change conference COP 17 in Durban were culminating, the partners of the Green Goal! event met on 9 December at the German Stand of the CCR Expo to discuss the outcomes of their four-day programme.

International dialogue on the football pitch

Durban, 08 December 2011. After observing the different stations of the Green Goal! event, Michael Kauch, member of the German parliament and his party’s spokesperson for environmental affairs, concluded: ‘This project makes clear: you can do something yourself.’ Not only high-level conferences and international agreements can lead to saving our environment, but also personal involvement and taking action. ‘You don’t have to wait for the politicians,’ he continued.

Goals for our Environment

Durban, 08 December 2011. A ‘Tree of Commitments’ has been growing at Hoy Park Sports Ground in Durban’s city centre since the beginning of this week. Wooden boards that carry personal commitments and messages from youngsters from the area are being attached to each other to resemble the trunk of a tree. The youth commit to ‘not throw papers on the ground’, ‘use public transport’ or ‘do not let a water tap running’.

Addressing climate change with football

Durban, 04 December 2011.  The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project has developed a new manual on how to raise environmental awareness using football, and presented its ‘Manual for Environmental Awareness’ to the public during the conference on climate change (COP 17) in Durban.

YDF Manual for Environmental Awareness published

Pretoria, 28 October 2011. The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project has published the ‘YDF Manual for Environmental Awareness,’ another short module in the YDF Toolkit that focuses on a specific topic. This manual shows how the potential of football can be used to raise environmental awareness and contribute to a healthy environment.

YDF Toolkit on Football and Life Skills under the patronage of UNESCO

Paris, 17 October 2011. The formulation of sport-for-development methodologies and tools is one of the most crucial cornerstones of the Youth Development through Football (YDF) project. Through expertise and years of committed work, YDF - and in particular one of the project’s former employees, Henning Schick - created what is today known as the ‘YDF Toolkit on Football and Life Skills’.

Mabopane, 13 October 2011. October 2011 saw a delegation of ten young journalists from Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan, Chad, Uganda, Sierra Leone and South Africa visit YDF partner Lesedi la Batho, a community centre whose Tswana name means ‘light to the people’, in Mabopane.

YDF Manual for HIV Prevention through Football launched and published!

Port Elizabeth, 11 October 2011. After piloting the ‘YDF Manual for HIV Prevention’ earlier this year, YDF trained the first group of 15 YDF instructors from 9 to 11 October on how to integrate education sessions on HIV prevention into football exercises.

First YDF Workshop for Instructors on Violence Prevention

Pretoria, 28 September 2011. The period between 26 and 29 September saw the first group of YDF instructors trained on violence prevention in Johannesburg through the Youth Development through Football (YDF) project. The ‘YDF Manual for Violence Prevention’, published in April 2011 as the first short module based on the YDF Toolkit, forms a crucial pillar in the future of German-South African cooperation for youth development. YDF has been called upon to play a vital role in this for its sister project, the Youth Development against Violence through Sport (YDVS).our description here.

Youth Development through Football hosts European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs

Mamelodi, 14 September 2011. While in the country to attend the EU-South Africa summit on 15 September in the Kruger Park, and after signing a 100-million-Euros support agreement with the South African Department of Health, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs visited a YDF event hosted at Mahlasedi Masana Primary School in Mamelodi.

Football for the Soul (by Zacharia Nale, Vaal Weekly)

Orange Farm, 08 September 2011. Dona’s Mates hosted another successful Youth Development through Football Coaches workshop at Tshepana Primary School from 6 September to 8 September 2011. Twenty eight coaches from across Gauteng Province attended the workshop.

SAHSS takes part in 2011 Homeless World Cup in Paris

Paris, 28 August 2011. After months of hard work, the 2011 Homeless World Cup is finally, and successfully, in the books. The much-anticipated 2011 Homeless World Cup was held in Paris from 21-28 August. South Africa put together a solid showing at the tournament, winning 6 of their 12 games en route to a 4th place finish in the City Cup.

YDF Manual for Violence Prevention: available for download

Pretoria, 16 August 2011. The recently published ‘YDF Manual for Violence Prevention’ can now be downloaded from the website section Tools we offer. Although the foundation module – the ‘YDF Manual for Coaches’ – does include an initial introduction to the complex topic of violence prevention, the ‘YDF Manual for Violence Prevention’ takes the topic further by building on the different forms of action that are possible and elaborating in detail on tips for taking action. It is the first in a series of short modules which focus on approaching specific challenges by using football.

YDF Manual for Coaches: available for download

Pretoria, 27 July 2011. The second edition of the ‘YDF Manual for Coaches’ is now available for download on the project website (www.za-ydf.org). Additionally to minor changes that have been made, this edition offers an entirely new chapter containing methodical series on important football skills. As YDF is aiming at a large scale dissemination of its tools, the possibility to download the manual will further strengthen the approach of the project. The ‘YDF Manual for Coaches’ that was republished in March 2011 can be downloaded on the website section Tools we offer.

YDF strengthens ties with UN

Pretoria, 26 July 2011. The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project is continuously deepening its relations with the United Nations. In May and June 2011, YDF was invited to several meetings and conferences held by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Pretoria, 24 July 2011. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is seeking proposals for the implementation of the Youth Development through Sport tools in Gauteng, Limpopo, Western Cape and Eastern Cape with financial assistance from the Youth Empowerment Programme funded by the European Union (EU).

Pretoria, 18 July 2011. In June 2011, the Youth Development through Football (YDF) project formed new partnerships with six non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from the South African provinces of the Free State, Northern Cape, North West and KwaZulu-Natal.

FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 - live screening in Johannesburg

Pretoria, 23 June 2011. The Goethe-Institute South Africa brings the World Cup fever back to South Africa – at least via television. During the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011, which takes place in Germany from 26 June to 17 July, all matches of the German team will be screened, starting with the opening game between Germany and Canada on Sunday, 26 June at 6 pm.

History serves as an example to youth

Pretoria, 23 June 2011. On 16 June 1976, thousands of young people stood up in protest against the apartheid regime in what came to be known as the Soweto Uprisings. This day marked the beginning of riots that contributed significantly to the country’s liberation from apartheid. Since 1994, this date has been celebrated annually as Youth Day in honour of the young people who lost their lives while standing up for their rights.

Speaking up for sport and social change

Johannesburg, 13 June 2011. The Gauteng Chapter of the Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN), which is supported through a Public-Private Partnership between YDF and Nike, held its first Regional Conference on 9 and 10 May at the Nike Centre in Soweto.

Call for applications for training on YDF short modules

Pretoria, 13 June 2011. YDF has recently added two short modules on violence prevention and HIV/AIDS prevention to its core toolkit. YDF-trained instructors (or the organisations they work for) have now the opportunity to participate in trainings for instructors on these short modules. The trainings will start by the end of July 2011. The application deadline is 4 July 2011.

Winning the League's crown

Mamelodi, 13 June 2011. The final games of the Mamelodi 8 League took place on 9 June at the Stanza Bopape sports ground in Mamelodi. At the end of the season, six teams - all six representing different schools - qualified to play a decisive match for winning the title in the three categories: 11-a-side Girls, 11-a-side Boys and 5-a-side Mixed. Besides playing for the golden trophy, the teams also competed for the honour of being the best team in terms of fair play.

Strengthening ties in Kenya

YDF Toolkit tackles next short manual: HIV/AIDS Prevention through Football

Port Elizabeth, 22 April 2011. The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project is taking another step forward with the creation of its next short manual. Ten experts came together at the Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) Conference Centre in Uitenhage from 19 to 20 April to develop the YDF Manual on HIV/AIDS Prevention through Football. The chosen venue in the Eastern Cape reflected the ongoing Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between YDF and VW South Africa.

One ball, one game - two winners

Mabopane, 21 April 2011. A rather pessimistic English football player once claimed: 'A football match lasts 90 minutes and in the end it's always the Germans who win.' A friendly game in Mabopane on 15 April once again proved this assertion to be wrong. The Lesedi Strikers from Mabopane, who are supported by YDF's partner 'SA Cares for Life', tied at three goals each with their German counterparts from FC Union60 Bremen.

YDF Manual for Coaches - revised edition released

Pretoria, 21 April 2011. After an extensive process of review and constructive feedback by coaches and experts in the field of sports and development, a second edition of the YDF Manual for Coaches has been released. With the publishing of this new edition, one of the core tools of YDF’s approach is now available with improvements based on the needs of its users. Several YDF partners contributed with their experience during the assessment process.

Manual on Violence Prevention through Football piloted

Pretoria, 20 April 2011. The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project has entered a new implementation phase. The recent publishing of its Manual on Violence Prevention marks a major step forward for the project, as it is the first in a series of so-called ‘Short Modules’, which focus on how specific challenges can be approached by using football: apart from violence prevention, upcoming issues will deal with topics such as HIV/AIDS, gender equality and the environment.

'Four Countries 4 Peace' - Bringing Youth Together

Kigali, 15 April 2011. ESPERANCE, YDF's partner in Rwanda, hosted the second edition of the ‘Four Countries 4 Peace' event on 17 and 18 March in Kigali. The core element of the four-day festival was the ‘Football Amahoro Tournament', which took place at the Kimisagara Youth Centre with participating teams from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda.

The 'Youth for Change' project

Mamelodi, 15 April 2011. 'Let's give him a big hand,' repeats Carol Ngang with his powerful and encouraging voice. Dozens of girls and boys follow the social worker's example, showing their appreciation for their fellow participants' comments. We find ourselves in one of the classrooms at Mahlasedi Masana Primary School in Mamelodi. 58 girls and boys from Mahlasedi Masana, Legora and Emasangweni primary schools are attending an HIV/AIDS workshop for youth peer educators and are paying close attention to Carol's explanations.

Members of German Parliament visit YDF

Johannesburg, 16 February 2011. Members of German Parliament, Ulla Schmidt and Dagmar Freitag, led a two-hour discussion on 16 February 2011 with the participants of a workshop about their experiences in implementing the Youth Development through Football (YDF) project which GIZ is executing on behalf of the German Government in South Africa and in nine other African countries.

YDF Press Release: German football foundation supports blind South African coach

Johannesburg, 16 February 2011. 'What a fine birthday present!' Football coach Dumisane Nthombela is beaming as he happily accepts EUR 2,000 donated by the Sepp Herberger Foundation. 'We are managing quite well as a team, but transport has always been a problem. The costs cut deeply into our tight budget and more than once players have not been able to attend training sessions.
